“Hey, boss man! How was the day off?”

Marcus paused mid-step as Van appeared in his field of vision. “Uh, it was fine, Van. How did things go in my absence?”

Van gave a carefree shrug. “Everything went smoothly, just like I told you it would.”

Despite his faith in the young man, Marcus bit back a comment that he would wait and look at the day’s deposits and other records before he blithely accepted Van’s assurances.

Marcus stepped into his office and removed his coat. “Any messages I need to return?”

Van shook his head, then paused like he’d just remembered something. “Actually, boss, Elena from housekeeping said she needed to talk to you.”

Marcus hesitated as he hung the coat up on a hook. “What was that about?”

Maybe it was just a difference in personality or that Marcus had more of the story, but Van didn’t appear to be as concerned as he probably should have been. “I figured it was about that baby you found a couple days ago, but I think she may also have said something about an unauthorized guest...”

Marcus’s brow furrowed. “Unauthorized guest? Like someone who somehow sneaked into one of our rooms?”

Van shrugged. “You’ll have to ask her.”

For a second, Marcus wondered why he had promoted this young man to assistant manager. Then, he remembered that for all his foibles, the young man was the first to step up and take a shift for someone else. More than that, he had an easy camaraderie with most of the guests.

He was just young and inexperienced when it came to dealing with the actual employees and their concerns.

Marcus sucked in a breath in an effort to emotionally prepare himself for going down to the laundry room again and facing Elena about whatever she’d sought him out for.

Grateful that Van slipped out to deal with a customer at the front desk about then, Marcus rubbed his face in exhaustion. The coffee was already starting to wear off, and he’d only been back at work for a few minutes. He’d probably need another cup before he tackled any of the issues still looming ahead of him.
